This is not an exhaustive list, just some extra crafts I was able to find resources and tutorials for. Many are just different embroidery styles, but I tried to include other crafts as well.
Please do let me know if you can think of any others!
For the main list, here IS some overlap in the ones I chose for sure. I combined Assissi work with cross stitch, as they’re very similar techniques.
Beaded embroidery, bargello, cross stitch, thread painting, stumpwork and others are all type of ‘Hand Embroidery’, but I still listed them all separately. In addition to Hand Embroidery. This is intentional, so you could choose to focus on a specific technique, or just learn general stitches.
Sashiko is listed separately but is also part of Visible Mending. You can use it for more decorative styles or as a mending technique.
However, here’s some of the other crafts I did not include in the main list because of various reasons. Mostly lack of time for additional research.
Feel free to try them out as well, you’ll just have to do some research of your own. :)
- Boro Embroidery (Similar to Sashiko, but mainly for mending. Mentioned under ‘visible mending’)
- Bead Embroidery (Not to be confused with embroidery with beads. Here the focus is on the beads rather than the thread.)
- Brazilian Embroidery (Uses Rayon/Satin floss)
- Circle Weaving (As it is I already crammed so many weaving options into the weaving category…)
- Crewel Embroidery (Tapestry wool)
- Dream Catchers (Cultural appropriation)
- English Paper Piecing // Other Hand Quilting (Most quilting is recommended to use sewing thread for strength, though you could absolutely baste with embroidery thread or quilt with perle cotton.. You could of course embroider onto a quilt as you piece it, but that falls more under the Embroidery category.)
- Goldwork (Specialty/Metallic threads)
- Kantha Embroidery (Wasn’t finding as many tutorials as the similar sashiko)
- Micro-Knitting (Having a hard time finding tutorials/resources compared to micro-crochet)
- Ronghua (Uses silk threads)
- Shisha Embroidery (Embroider tiny mirrors onto things!)
- Temari (Couldn’t find an example using stranded cotton, but it could work…?)
